“Fun” is an understatement for what Emily and Shas’s two-day Hyatt Regency on the Hudson wedding was.

The mixing of both traditional western and Hindu wedding rituals meant packing tons of excitement in to the weekend.  Fusing two vastly different cultures like that is always special, and is quite similar to how Emily and Shas’s different personalities were merging together.

Emily and Shas are an incredibly entertaining duo.

Shas’s relentless sarcasm is balanced out completely by Emily’s unbreakable enthusiasm.  Despite their surface differences, they share a hilariously dark sense of humor and have a deep respect for one another.  When Emily was coming to visit him in Chicago, Shas had a sudden realization at 3 AM that he was in love with her and called her immediately to tell her so.  After their trip together, Emily’s feelings must have been all over her face because her cab driver took one look at her and said, “You love him very much, I can tell.”

We started Friday night off on a high note with an energetic Mehndi.

Emily’s saree sparkled in the light as she entered, radiant looking with intricate mehndi adorning her hands.  She and Shas circulated through the party, enjoying their friends and family who had gathered together.  After pleasantries, the soon-to-be husband and wife sat at the front of the stage to enjoy the night’s entertainment.  Shas’s father kicked off the night with a welcome speech and a song.  He was followed by children dancing, a family band performance that rivalled the Jackson 5, and more dancers that started alone, but who quickly coaxed all those in attendance on to the dance floor.

Saturday began with a beautiful white horse, a soon-to-be-married man riding it, and friends and family dancing along the water.

Shas rode his royally decorate horse alongside the Hudson river as his guests moved to the rhythm of the drums.  High above on the rooftop of the hotel, Emily and her bridesmaids watched the procession in delight, waving to all of the baraatis.  When they arrived to the ceremony area, the music took over and everyone started dancing without fear.  Shas got off of his horse and boogied his way over to his mother and grandmother.

The Hindi ceremony that followed was beautifully elegant and true to tradition.

The mandaap stood at the front, adorned with jewels and draped all over with silky fabric.  Considering only half of the guests had any idea what was going on, the officiant was very accommodating to explain each step carefully to the crowd.  Despite it being a traditional ceremony, Emily and Shas’s goofy personalities shined through.  For example, Shas forgot his shoes on the side of the mandaap and had to bribe a couple bridesmaids hilariously to get them back.

After the Hindi ceremony, Emily and Shas boarded a metaphorical plane back west for their next event.

With the Hudson sparkling in the background, they shared a special first look.  Even though it wasn’t really the first time they had seen each other all day, they both were just as excited and in love as if they hadn’t seen each other in months.  Emily’s bubbled up as she struggled to contain her giggles.  The happy couple rode back to the Hyatt Regency on the Hudson and dove right into the next ceremony.  It started off very sweet and emotional as most weddings are, and then quickly devolved into uncontrollable laughter when the officiant explained how Emily really felt when she first met Shas (she thought he was a bit too arrogant for her).

A spirited reception was the best close to this whirlwind Hyatt Regency on the Hudson wedding.

Because of the long day, Bukhara almost immediately brought out the food.  I was so excited, this was some of the best food I think I have ever had; I had three plates!  The hilarity of the day spread into each speech that night and by the end of them, everyone’s abs were sore from laughing.  Even though we were all stuffed and happy, the music was too enticing and everyone found their own groove out on the floor.  Driven by a drummer’s perfect beat, guests all over found their inner dancer and broke out into solos; even Emily and Shas!  I have never felt as much energy as I did that night.  People of all ages were fueled by the music and kept the hotel bouncing all night.

I am so thankful to have been included in this incredible celebration and I hope all the best for Emily and Shas!
